Biography: Soon after David's marriage to Cyrene, they went up the steep wooded hill, which lay to the left of Purdy Creek going from Canisteo to Andover. There they purchased a tract of land at the very top of the hill, which was later named Call Hill. The forest was dense, a real wilderness inhabited by wild beasts. With much perseverance and a great deal of hard work, David cleared the land and built a log cabin. Before the doors were ready for hanging, he found it necessary to keep a constant fire burning in front of the cabin to keep away the wolves. The unworked soil of the hill was very rich and excellent for farming. Most of David's children were born on Call Hill. Both David and Cyrene were very religious, being devoted to the Baptist faith. When their youngest daughter, Olive Sabrina, was a young woman, they moved from their home on Call Hill to West Virginia, where they remained during the Civil War. Later they returned to Hartsville and settled at the foot of Call Hill near Purdy Creek on a road now known as the Todd or Acker Road. Their home was just across a little creek from the log house of Margaret Acker and her two sons, who later married David's two daughters, Huldah Jane and Olive Sabrina. They lived active lives not only in their homes but in the Community as well.
